We have begun the construction of our new sanctuary, and with praise on our lips and thanksgiving in our hearts, this month, we celebrate a sister who has been a faithful member for many years, Sis. Jewel Johnson. God speaks of “jewels” in Malachi 3:17 as His treasured possessions and Sis. Jewel is a treasured member of our church family.

Her journey with Pleasant Grove began in 1965 following in the footsteps of her mother who was a member under the leadership of the late Pastor A.A. McCardell.
Sis. Jewel joined under the late Pastor, Dr. C.L. Jackson and continues to serve under our current Pastor, Dr. S.L. Jackson.

In 1973, she married Bro. Frederic Johnson, and together they raised two sons, Dwaine and Frederic Jr. As a result of the union, they have 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Sis. Jewel’s Godly influence was seen in the presence of her granddaughter Sydney who sang in the choir for several years. She also exhibited Godly love and compassion as she lovingly cared for her husband during his prolonged illness until his death.

Professionally, Sister Jewel served the community through her work with the Harris County Hospital District for 32 years before retiring in 2009. She attended Kashmere Sr. High School and continued her education at Texas Southern University.

Sis. Jewel has always been an active member of Pleasant Grove. She was a member of the Deborah Circle under Sis. Louise Bailey and she was appointed First Vice President of the Mission in the late 1980s by Sis. Ruth Wheatley, a position she continues to hold today. She has been a choir member since 1989 and says, “It is a privilege to lift my voice in praise and become a joyful part of our worship experience.” Sis. Jewel has collaborated on numerous committees and along with her husband sponsored several summer vacation trips exposing young children to the love of God and the beauty of God’s creation.

In her leisure time, Sis. Jewel enjoys shopping and travelling.

When storms arise, Sister Jewel stands firm on the comforting words shared by Pastor Sheldon Jackson from John 14:27:

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”. This scripture remains her anchor, her reminder, and her testimony: “Most of all, I trust in God my Savior—the One who will never fail.”

Let’s continue to pray for Sis. Jewel Johnson as she demonstrates what it means to serve with joy, love unconditionally, walk with purpose and trust God through every season.
