Member of the Month of April Cynthia Johnson
Member of the month – Sis. Cynthia Johnson
This month we would like to acknowledge Sis. Cynthia Johnson, a multi-talented, community-involved, young entrepreneur and active member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Sis. Cynthia has been a member of the church all her life. The proud daughter of Sis. Carrie Johnson and the niece of Sis. Sherry O’Neal and Sis. Carla Johnson. They introduced her to the Lord at an early age and mentored her walk with God. She was baptized and began her Christian journey under the leadership of the late Pastor, Dr. Charles L. Jackson. As a youth, she attended Sunday School, sang in the Little Folks Choir, participated in the drill team and served in the street ministry. Years later, she joined Mission II in the Mary Magdalene Circle. The mission sisters visit the sick in nursing homes, hospitals, and do home visits. Sis. Cynthia says that “these acts of outreach help to increase my gratitude to God, and I strive to live humbly by thanking Him for what He continues to bring us through.”
Under the leadership of Pastor, Dr. Sheldon L. Jackson she was appointed as co-president of the Young Adults, and she has served in that capacity for the past sixteen years. Sis. Cynthia believes following Christ in her Pastor continues to lay the pathway of how to be an example to others in leadership. She is also a co-teacher in Sunday School, serving in the intermediate department for over twenty years. During these journeys, she has learned to be grateful for the celebrations and challenges as they have strengthened her faith in Christ and kept her grounded in the Word of God. She patterns her life after Philippians 4:12-13, “I know how to be based, and I know how to abound everywhere, and, in all things, I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Upon graduation from high school, Sis. Cynthia was awarded a scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. This helped her to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Administration at Texas Southern University. She later earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Phoenix, along with two graduate certificates in health technology. Sis. Cynthia has been employed by the State of Texas for the past fifteen years and has served in multiple roles, assisting the community with social service needs and support. She is currently a Training and Development Specialist, guiding new and tenured employees during their educational journey of federal and local government policies and changes.
Sis. Cynthia is not only very active in the church and at work, but she is very involved in the community. She is a member of various organizations: The Black Achiever’s Professional Network, where she collaborates with other black professionals and entrepreneurs of diverse backgrounds; the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Scholarship Alumni organization, assisting with community outreach and youth education advancement; the Kingdom Inside Me Ministries, a non-profit that focuses on women’s life support, mentorship, and service; an advisory board member of the Spring Economic Development Council, responsible for local educational fairs, professional networking, and dissemination of resource material for local business owners; and a volunteer of the Houston Millennial Professional Networking Organization.
As if all the activities above were not enough, Sis. Cynthia runs her own home-based travel business. It allows her to infuse her love of travelling with her experience of hosting events and helping others to plan trips. She is presently combining her business acumen and her desire to help her Church by organizing a “Cruise for a Cause.” She thanks God for all the opportunities and lessons learned along the way. A favorite passage of scripture is Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love the Lord, to them who are called according to his purpose”.
Even though she’s a hard-working young woman, Sis. Cynthia still finds time to enjoy her family and friends. She is consistently seen on Wednesday nights at Prayer Meeting and choir rehearsal regardless of her other activities. Her commitment to God and his ministry is unwavering. Let’s show Sis. Cynthia some love and support in the comments below and keep her lifted up in our prayers.
