Member of the Month – January Sis. Carrie Johnson
Pastor Sheldon tells us that 2026 is our year of preparation to receive the bountiful blessings in store for us. While we wait with thanksgiving in our hearts, let’s celebrate a stalwart, faithful, loyal, hardworking and courageous member of Pleasant Grove MBC for the past 44 years, our beloved sister, Carrie Johnson. Sis. Carrie is the mother of Sis. Cynthia Johnson, President of the Young Adult Choir; and the sister of Sis. Sherry O’Neal, President of Mission II, Mary Magdalene Circle, and Sis. Carla Johnson.
She was a pioneer in the automotive industry. Sis. Carrie has been featured in the Lone Star College System magazine as, “A shining star in the automotive industry.” Her love for automotive repair was sparked at an early age working alongside her father to maintain the family vehicles. This love motivated her to continue her education at the Contemporary Occupational Training Center. Over the past 48 years, until her retirement, Sis. Carrie has performed various roles in the automotive industry. She started as a technician at Western Auto, Sears and Montgomery Wards Automotive Center. Along the way she furthered her education and has an A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) degree from Lone Star College. She has participated in MOPAR CAP Career Automotive Program and achieved multiple certifications in her field of employment. Sis. Carrie graduated from her position as a technician to become a teacher at Cypress Creek High School, an instructor at Universal Technical Institute and a Professor at Lone Star College. A remarkable accomplishment in a male dominated profession. She says, “God has been and still is good to me. That’s why I love like I have never been hurt, work like I’ve never been paid and dance like nobody is watching.”
Sis. Carrie is not only committed to reaching great heights in her profession, but also in working diligently to promote the good news of salvation. She is a member of the Prison Fellowship Ministries and Kingdom Inside Me Ministries. She says, “I love God’s people and that’s why I witness in my home, neighborhood, work, streets and prisons.” An active member at the church, Sis. Carrie is a member of the Choir, a Sunday School teacher, and the Vice President of Mission II, Mary Magdalene Circle. She organizes her mission sisters to visit the sick and shut in. In addition to these functions, Sis. Carrie and Sis. Josephine kept the sanctuary clean and tidy at our Conti location for many years. Her motivation was love of God’s house.
Sis. Carrie has served under the late Pastor, Dr. C.L. Jackson and our current Pastor, Dr. S.L. Jackson who have strengthened her walk with God. She says, “My walk with Christ Jesus has matured me to the level where I am no longer on milk, but meat. During times of distress, I find solace in the sixth number of the Psalms and I meditate on the 23rd Psalms when I need encouragement. I am still growing.”
Let’s continue to pray that the Holy Spirit will speak through Sis. Carrie as she encounters many who have not heard or accepted the Lord as their personal Savior. Also, ask for compassion and strength for her and family as they care for Sis. Sherry O’Neal.
